Let’s Meet My New Puppy! 😉
Nine months ago, my family and I lost our dog unexpectedly, and we thought we wouldn’t be ready to have a dog again for another few years because it was such a traumatizing and difficult time.
However, one incident of hearing about a dog that may need a home made me realize that if we can give a loving home, why not help and adopt a puppy in a shelter in need of a family?
So, we went to multiple events, shelters, and websites for over a month with no luck, as many dogs we applied for were adopted soon after. This frustrating time of searching for the right dog to bring into our home made me realize more and more that I am ready and ecstatic for another furry friend to enter my life again.
I was constantly on the same websites over and over to see if they updated with new puppies because although I knew that puppies in shelters weren’t easy to find, I wanted to watch a puppy grow up with us. The constant refreshing worked because one day, I found that the East Bay SPCA had added one new puppy, and I instantly fell in love with him. I showed my entire family, and everyone was ready to get him.
Unfortunately, they weren’t open for the next two days, so that time of waiting gave me so much anxiety. I barely slept for those two nights.
When the day came to pick him up, my brother and I arrived at the shelter an hour before they opened because this shelter ran on a first-come, first-serve basis. Because of our constant pacing outside their locked doors, one of the people who worked there asked if we were waiting for them to open.
When we told him that we were because we wanted to adopt a specific puppy there, he told us that it was good we were here early because they got a lot of phone calls and emails about that puppy over the weekend.
A while later, another person who worked there brought a dog out to play in their yard. He asked us what we were waiting for and when we informed him, he told us that he had seen this puppy, and it was adorable. Again, that just increased my excitement, hearing people talk about him and reassuring us that he hasn’t been adopted yet.
When the doors finally opened, we walked straight to the front desk and said we were there to adopt this specific puppy and that our form was already filled out. The woman at the front desk immediately went to bring the puppy to us in a playroom, and the first time I held him, tears fell because he was so precious.
He was so small, eight weeks old and three pounds in my arms, and I didn’t want to let go. We played with him for a few minutes and knew he was the one. I believe everything happens for a reason, and I think that all the dogs we applied for didn’t work out because this little guy was meant to be in our family.
So, everyone…MEET DAX! He was found in a box with his two brothers (all adopted when we arrived) in an alley in Oakland. Since we took him home, I’ve been so happy. He is the sweetest little puppy and is so good with people. I completely forgot how much work a puppy is, which is the only stressful part about this, but I love him, and I’m glad we can give him the love he didn’t have when he first arrived.
You can check out my Facebook for more adorable but not-so-high-quality pictures of Dax because I am that crazy mom who thinks he’s too adorable and needs 100 pictures taken daily.
